Kindergarten: Hangman with Onset and Rime

Hello everyone, my name is Wendy!

I love to create fun games and crafts that make learning easier and much more fun. For this activity, we will be adding a twist to the classic hangman game that will make learning rime more fun for everyone. One of my and my students favorite games to play during free time is hangman. It’s easy for anyone to play and also an easy way to make learning words fun.

The goal of this activity is to have students be able to understand what an onset and rime is. Students will be able to blend and segment onsets and rimes of single syllable spoken words so that it is easier for them to read and spell.

This will meet the Arizona Common Core standard K.RF.2, by teaching students to blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words.

What you will need:

● Provided template

● Piece of cardboard

● Clear tape

● Glue

● Scissors

● String/yarn ● Pencil

  • White paper
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  •  Paper protector
  • White board
  • White board marker
  • Onset and Rime flashcards

Directions:

Making a DIY White Board

  1. Using a paper protector and white blank sheet of paper have the student insert a white blank paper inside the paper protector to create their own white board!

Making the Flash cards

  1. Have the student fold the paper hot dog style.
  2. Have the student fold hamburger style now and open it up to reveal the lines created by the folds
  3. Cut at the lines

4. Take two colored markers and assign one color to be the onset and the other color for the rime.

  1. Ask and explain to students what onset and rime is.
  2. Create flashcards for the words in this list:

7. After you finish all flashcards, shuffle the cards and distribute 5 to each person playing hangman.

Playing Hangman with onset and rime:

  1. Make sure that every player has about 5 cards each. Students are not allowed to look at each other’s cards.
  2. Using the whiteboard, have the students grab a dry erase marker and draw their hangman setup.
  1. Decide which player goes first (Students can play rock-paper-scissors or see who can come up with more words for the rime -og)
  2. First player will choose one of their cards and provide the blanks for others to guess.
  1. The player will then provide clues such as the rime of this word is “at” along with other clues if the players get stuck such as “this word can be a pet”
  2. First person to guess the word wins a point. If the word is not guessed before the man is completed then the player has to reveal the word and no one wins that point.
  3. After everyone has used their cards the person with the most points is the winner

Result:

You will have an easy to visualize way to blend and segment onset and rimes while having fun playing a game that puts to practice those skills.
