2nd Grade: The Puppet Show

Hi everyone! My name is Florence.

I love all sorts of animals which is why I chose to integrate animal puppets and learning. Sometimes when we read a story, we just read it for the fun of it. However, it is important to interact with the characters so we would be able to understand the text better. The puppets acting out the story will help you learn to detect what the characters feel, want, and some of the struggles they are facing.

The goal of this activity is to have students learn how characters respond to major events and challenges. The student has the opportunity to use puppets in acting out the story of the text.

This will meet the Arizona Common Core standard 2.RL.3, by teaching students to describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

What you will need:

● Provided template

● Piece of cardboard

● Clear tape

● Glue

● Scissors

● String/yarn ● Pencil

  • Cut outs
  • Paper
  • Pencil/Pen
  • Any Coloring Material (color pencils, markers, paint – etc.)
  • Paper Plate

Directions:

  1. Make sure you have at least  4 people to help you act out the story. The main characters in the story are the hare, tortoise, and hare.

2. Each person going to act the story will have access to the story.

3. You can draw the animal you are acting as in the story of the Hare and the tortoise. Be creative and have fun creating your animal character.

4. You will each take turns reading your assigned part of  the story.

5. Once you are all done with the story you can discuss major events that happened to your character and some of the challenges they faced in the story. You will put these information in a plot structure.

Results: You should have a completed  plot structure which includes the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and finally the resolution.
