3rd Grade: Favorite Animal Facts!

Hello everyone, my name is Brooke!

I am a freshman at ASU and I am currently majoring in psychology. After I graduate, I am hoping to become a pediatric occupational therapist! My goal is to create fun, educational activities that can be enjoyed by anyone! My hobbies include crafts, reading and playing with my cats. I truly believe that with the right approach, learning can be fun and engaging for everyone!

The goal of this activity is to have students research information on their favorite animals to create a fun, interactive brochure! The student is given a chance to create this brochure to advertise key information on their favorite animal in their local zoo!

This will meet the Arizona Common Core standard 3.W.8, by teaching students to recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources; take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.

What you will need:

● Provided template

● Piece of cardboard

● Clear tape

● Glue

● Scissors

● String/yarn ● Pencil

  • Paper (lined or blank)
  • Pencil
  • Internet access
  • Coloring supplies (markers, colored pencils, etc.)

Directions:

  1. Gather all of the necessary materials!
  2. First, you will begin by picking your topic of research. I want you to do research on your favorite animal! My favorite animal is a giraffe, so that’s what I’ll be researching!
  3. To start off, I want you to take a piece of lined paper for your notes. Before doing any online research, I want you to write down any of the prior knowledge or experience you have with the animal.
  4. Then, you will need to find 3 digital or print sources about your animal! Take notes on the key details of each source, these will be used later for your zoo brochure!

5. After you have gathered all the information, you will need to sort the information into the provided categories below.

  • Characteristics of the animal (what they look like), geographic location of the animal (where they live), diet of the animal (what they eat), and fun facts about the animal

6. Now it’s time to make a brochure about the animal for your local zoo! Start off by taking a blank piece of paper, and folding it into thirds.

7. On the cover of the brochure, you will be creating the cover page! Write down the name of the animal, then decorate the cover however you’d like! Make sure it’s colorful!

8. On the inside pages of the brochure, you will be writing down the rest of the information you’ve gathered. Make sure to organize your information into the provided categories!

  • I would recommend drawing pictures to go along with the information to make the zoo brochure look more exciting!

9. Finally, on the back page of the brochure, you should write down why this animal is your favorite animal! Now, you’ve created a brochure for your local zoo that advertises your favorite animal!

Result: You have successfully created an informative brochure about your favorite animal! You used digital resources to gather information on your topic, then sorted them into separate categories. After this, you used the information to create a fun reusable brochure that you can keep to remember all the key details on your favorite animal!
