3rd Grade: Draw Yourself Into Writing

Hi! My name is Mercedes and I am a teacher in the making!

I’m part of the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers college at Arizona State University.  Teaching is my passion and I am working hard with America Reads to create fun activities for kids and their families to do while keeping safe at home during these hard times.

In this activity, you will learn how to turn a fun drawing activity into a creative writing to make connections in what we see and say.

This will meet Arizona Common Core standard 3.W.3, which teaches students to write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

What you will need:

● Provided template

● Piece of cardboard

● Clear tape

● Glue

● Scissors

● String/yarn ● Pencil

  • Paper
  • Color Pencils
  • Pencil
  • Plastic bag or container

Directions:

  1. Start off by asking your child to draw 3 different scenes with 3 random objects in them or you can split the work and each do one.

2. Once done drawing, fold the paper and place into a bag or container.

  1. Shake the bag to mix the paper and have your child choose one.
  1. Whichever one they chose, they will have to write a short story about what is going on in the picture.
  1. Proofread and fix any grammatical errors with your child.

Now that you have done this fun activity with your child, you have helped them start developing their skills to produce descriptive and clear event sequences!
