3rd Grade: Candy Grouping Multiplication

Hello everyone! My name is Diareli!

I  am a student in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers college at ASU. I am a senior pursuing a degree in secondary education. My goal as a future educator is to inspire young minds and get students excited about learning.

In this activity, students will practice building their multiplication skills by using the grouping method. They will create equal groups to represent different multiplication expressions. This will allow students to visually see how the products of multiplication problems are found.

This will meet the Arizona Common Core standard 3.OA.A.1, by teaching students to Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.

What you will need:

● Provided template

● Piece of cardboard

● Clear tape

● Glue

● Scissors

● String/yarn ● Pencil

  • Blank copy paper
  • Scissors
  • Small objects for counting (candy pieces, marbles, etc.)
  • Preferred writing tool
  • Index cards
  • Black marker

Directions:

  1. Gather all the listed materials.
  2. Trace a round object on your paper to make a circle cut-out (I traced the lid of a cup and that worked fine).

a. You will need a total of 10 circle cut-outs.

3. Cut out the circles you traced in the previous step.

  1. Take your index cards and write multiplication facts on them.
  1. Mix the cards up and put them in a pile.
  1. Have your student take an index card from the pile.
  2. Have them use the circle cut-outs and the small objects of your choice to represent the multiplication expression on the card.

a. The first number in the multiplication expression represents the number of groups.

b. The second number represents the number of objects in each group.

8. Have your student find the product of each expression.
