2nd Grade: The Lesson of the Story is to Paint

Hi! My name is Mercedes!

I am a teacher in the making. I’m part of the Mary  Lou Fulton Teacher college at Arizona State University.  Teaching is my passion and I am working hard with America Reads to create fun activities for kids and their families to do while keeping safe at home during these hard times.

The goal in this activity is to help the student understand the importance of lessons or morals in folktales from diverse cultures.

This will meet the Arizona Common Core standard 2.RL.2, by teaching students to, recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

What you will need:

● Provided template

● Piece of cardboard

● Clear tape

● Glue

● Scissors

● String/yarn ● Pencil

  • Access to the internet
  • 3 Large rocks
  • Paints
  • Paint brushes
  • Markers

Directions:

  1. Go ahead and go to http://www.read.gov/aesop/128.html . Choose one or more stories from this website

2. Once you are done reading the short story and understand the lesson behind the story. Think about a design to represent the beginning and the ending part of the story. Do the same for the lesson of the plan. ( Tip: if you’re a visual thinker, you may sketch this part out.)

3. On one rock, draw the design for the beginning on the second rock, paint the design for the ending. For the third rock draw the design for the lesson on the story.

  1. Once they are finished and dried, display them so everyone sees your work of art!

Once this activity is completed, the student will be able to know what it means when a story’s has a lesson behind it. This will also allow students to let their creativity grow. Have fun and stay safe.
